Harvey Hanson

Harvey Hanson, formerly of Decorah, died Monday, Oct. 26, at a Chipley, Fla., hosptial.

Mr. Hanson will be remembered in Decorah. He was on the first baseball team in Winneshiek County and played banjo and sang with the Herb Gross orchestra. He and his wife,Goldie, ran the Gross Cafe while they lived in Decorah. His two older sons were members of the Decorah Kilties that marched in the inaugural parade for President Eisenhower at Washington D.C.

The couple moved to Florida where his wife's parents were located, and they made their home at Wausau, Fla. These were not retirement years for Mr. Hanson, however, because he was elected to serve three terms as mayor of Wausau and helped build and lay out a recreation complex for the town which included tennis, baseball and softball playing areas. He also helped in the preparations for the annual Possum Day held the first week in August at Wausau, which drew tremendous crowds to the town. He was a member of the Jaycees.

Mr. Hanson is survived by his wife, the former Goldie Allen; two sons, Harvey Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Durwin of Wausau, Fla.; an adopted daughter; a sister, Peggy Dinger, and a nephew, David Dinger, of Decorah. A son, Kenny, died seven years ago.

His sister, Peggy Dinger, and nephew, David Dinger, and Carol attended funeral services at Chipley on Wednesday. Burial was at Wausau Gardens.
