Edna M. Thompson, age 81, of Decorah, Iowa, died Monday, June 3, 2013 at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, June 7, 2013 at Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. David Sorensen and Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Freeport Cemetery in Freeport.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 6 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, and on Friday after 1:00 P.M., one hour before the service, at Decorah Lutheran Church.

Edna Mae Sylvanus was born on May 8, 1932, to William and Fern (Rector) Sylvanus in Minburn, IA. Edna attended Ridgeway High School and graduated with the class of 1951. Edna was united in marriage to La Moyne Thompson on June 16, 1951 at Ridgeway Lutheran Church. To this union two children were born: David and Michael.

Edna helped on the family farm, worked as a homemaker, at Anundsen Publishing, Ben Franklin, and the Freeport Store. Edna was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church, Freeport Circle, and Deborah Circle. Edna taught Bible and Sunday school, lead Bible studies, was a 4-H leader, upholstered furniture, sewed clothing and blankets. Edna enjoyed cooking and baking, gardening, camping, mushroom hunting, dancing, playing cards, spending time with her family and friends, and entertaining many campers on Memorial Day Weekend on Edna’s Bottom.

Edna is survived by her husband of 61 years, La Moyne Thompson, Decorah; son Michael (Christine) Thompson, Decorah; Daughter in Law, Diane Thompson, Clarion; Sisters Barbara (Doug) Cromwell, Queen City, TX; Sharon (Jerry) Schmidt, Cedar Rapids; Brother Roger (Ruth) McCreight, Tucson, AZ; Sister-in-law Geneva (Roland) Halverson, Decorah; Brother-in-law Ron Dehning, Decorah; Grandchildren: Brandy (Brian Clark) Thompson, Rochester, MN; Justin (Nikki) Thompson, Sioux City; Jessica (Randall) Sullivan, Decorah; Denise (Tom) Barber, Albertville, MN; and Erik (Heather Hankins) Drievold, La Crosse, WI; Great Grandchildren: Lexie Leuenberger (father Jesse); Ashby Clark (father Brian); Kinsley and Kanyon Thompson; Bryan, Rawson, and Baby expected in August Sullivan; Aydian Hankins, and Morgan Drievold. Edna is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents: William and Fern Sylvanus; in laws, Albert and Leona Thompson; brothers William Sylvanus and Edward McCreight; sister Kathy Dehning; and son David Thompson on April 2, 2010.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Freeport Cemetery or the Alzheimer’s Association (Edna’s Bottom Warriors) in honor of Edna.
