C.J. Hjelmeland Funeral Services Set for Friday

Funeral services for Conrad John Hjelmeland, 55, a custodian at Luther College, will be Friday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. in First Lutheran Church.

Mr. Hjelmeland died Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Smith Memorial Hospital following a lingering illness.

The Rev. Glenn Kappelmann will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, with the Olson-Fjelstul Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. His body will lie in state at the church from 12:30 until time for the services.

Pallbearers for the service are Richard Flaskerud, Lester Hjelmeland, Leonard Carolan, Erling Knutson, Herbert Bergsrud and Robert Wemark. Mrs. Geolrge Rowland will be the soloist, with Norman Linscheid at the organ.

Floral committee is comprised by Mrs. Leo Houdek, Mrs. Leonard Carolan, and Mrs. Lester Hjelmeland.

He was born May 17, 1912, in Mason City and graduated from the Calmar High School. He served in World War II for four year in the Air Force, stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska.

On Aug. 6, 1940, he was united in marriage to Amelia Espeseth in Decorah. Mrs. Hjelmeland survives, along with one son, David, of Decorah. Other survivors include one brother, Robert, of Decorah, and a sister, Mrs. Henry Flaskerud, of near Calmar.

Hjelmeland was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and has served for 27 years as a custodian at Luther College.
