Postville Herald, Thur., 19 July 1923.
Roland Reed Boehm was born on the 20th day of June, 1904, at Decorah, Iowa. His early boyhood and the first few years of school life were there spent. Seven years ago the family removed to Postville, where they have since resided.
About nine months ago he began ailing and it was thought best that he give up school in order that he might devote his entire time and energy to getting well. But in spite of the hard fight which he put up and in spite of the best medical skill available, he finally succumbed, passing away at Rochester, Minn., on Friday morning, July 13th, 1923.
It was certainly a disappointment to him to sit idly by while the other boys and girls continued their studies; it was hard for him to stand on the side-lines while the others played the game; it was hard to see his class graduated from High School while he sat by. But these are some of the disappointments which must be borne- and he bore them.
Being of a cheerful disposition and possessing certain natural athletic abilities he was popular in school and community and made friends wherever he went. He was recognized as an able athlete, as one who played the game hard- hard but fair, a dutiful son, a true friend.
He departs this life at the age of 19 years and 23 days, leaving to mourn his most untimely departure his parents, one sister, a brother, grandparents, besides many other relatives and countless friends.
Funeral services were conducted from the home last Sunday afternoon by Rev. J. A. Saathoff, following which the remains were conveyed to Decorah for interment.
The following from out of town were present at the funeral: Mrs. Frank Bailey, Minneapolis; Mrs. Fred Sobek Jr., son and daughter, Lacrosse, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sobek, Stevens Point, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Smith, Lacrosse, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bandle, Spring Valley, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. I. H. Conigisky, Peoria, Ill.; besides many relatives and friends from Decorah.
