Ossian Bee - Transcription of Obituary of: Joseph J Schissel

Joseph J. Schissel, a well-known resident of this community, died Sunday (April 4,1954) at the home of his son Edward Schissel northwest of Freeport, Iowa, Mr. Schissel, who was 78 years old had been in ill health for a year.

Funeral services were conducted this (Wednesday) morning in St Francis de Sales church by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. J. Thiltgen assisted by the Rev. E. J. Frost. Burial was made in the church cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: LaVem Schissel, Dale Schissel, Luke Schissel, John Schissel, Jr., Lee Schissel, and Leonard Triska.

Joseph J Schissel was born July 8, 1875 at Festina, Iowa, a son of Joseph and Caroline Schissel. He spent his entire life in this vicinity. For many years he operated what is known today as the Leo Holthaus farm west of Ossian. Twenty years ago he retired and since then made his home with his sons.

In February 1899, he was united in marriage with Miss Stephanie Funke, the ceremony taking place at Ossian; she preceded him in death on April 8, 1920.

Survivors include three sons; Ludwig J. Schissei of Ossian, Edward Schissel and Jack Schissel of Decorah, Iowa, and one brother John G Schissel of Burr Oak, Iowa.

Mr. Schissel was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one daughter who died in infancy; two sisters; Mrs. Tony Kleve of Freeport, Minnesota, Mrs. Henry Scheidemantel of Ossian; two brothers, Peter Schissel of Cedar Rapids and Nick Schissel of Ossian.
