Prof. Christ. Gilbertson died Monday last at the County Poor Farm in Freeport. Mr. Gilbertson was well known in Northeastern Iowa and Southern Minnesota, as well as Decorah, having for many years been first violinist with Ervin’s orchestra which, in its travels covered a large portion of the country. About a dozen years ago he had a stroke of paralysis which incapacitated him for further work in orchestras, and left him without means of making a living, his misfortune even affecting his speech. His friends here raised a purse of money and sent him to his old home in Norway where it was thought he could end his days in peace with relatives and friends, but the authorities there immediately deported him as a dependent, and he spent his last days at Freeport. He was an excellent violinist and was a man well liked in his day. —Decorah Journal.
