Postville Review, Fri., 1 Dec. 1911. From the Decorah Republican.
Mrs. Nathan Peckham died at her home Saturday night, Nov. 25, 1911. The circumstances leading to her death are sad in the extreme. The facts as we have them are as follows: A gasoline stove which had been used during the summer had been put away and the gasoline emptied in a small pail and set away on a cupboard in the woodshed. While the family were temporarily out of the house, in some manner she got hold of the vessel and thinking it was water emptied it into a coffee pot and set it on the stove, when the explosion occurred, setting her clothing on fire. She rushed out in the yard screaming and her son George who was working near, rushed to assistance, tore her clothing off and extinguished the flames, but not until she had been fatally burned. She lingered in agony several hours until death relieved her. This is indeed a sad ending to a long and useful life.
Several years since the husband met his death by being thrown from a vehicle while the team was running away.
