Funeral services for Earl Smith were held Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa. The Reverend Dave L. Lenth officiated. Marlys Hager was the organist. The casket bearers were Larry Brockway, Daryl Helgerson, Charlie T. Brown, Mark Imoehl, Lowell Corlett, and Tom Schultz. Burial was in the Bloomfield Cemetery at Castalia, with Military Honors. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Earl Elroy Smith, the son of William David and Margaret Irene (Mundinger) Smith, was born January 4, 1933, at Monticello, Iowa. He passed away Wednesday morning, July 9, 2003, in Veteran Memorial Hospital at Waukon, Iowa. He had reached the age of 70 years, 6 months, and 5 days.
He attended the Monticello and Cedar Rapids Schools. Earl served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was married to Agnes Virginia Szabo on June 28, 1953, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. To this union three children were born.
Earl worked as a carpenter and was a barber in both Ossian and Cedar Rapids. He had been employed as a forklift operator at the Swiss Valley Plant in Luana.
Earl was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church and served as a Deacon. He was busy in the community as well, serving a term as Mayor and then as the Water Superintendent of the town. He was also a volunteer fireman and member of the V.F.W. in Ossian.
Earl enjoyed music, including country and polka music. He and Agnes enjoyed dancing to polkas. Earl also liked to fish, camp, and play cards with his friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Agnes, his father William, his stepmother, Georgia Smith, one brother, Robert, a sister, Ruth, 3 brothers-in-law: Theodore Szabo, William Szabo and Dayle Szabo; 3 sisters-in-law, Marilyn Wander, Darlene Schultz, and Mary Szabo.
Surviving are his children, Kevin (Janet) Smith of Castalia, Deanna (Craig) Poff of South St. Paul, MN, and Larry (Joanna) Smith of Castalia; 7 grandchildren, Jamie (Laurie) Smith, Kessiah Smith, Kelsey Smith, Eric (Sarah) Poff, Tricia Poff and her fiance, Wayne Christoffersen, Angela Smith, and Cody Smith; 5 great grandchildren, Mason and Peyton Smith, Hope, Cindle, and Liam Poff; his mother, Margaret Irene Smith; one sister, Edna (Marvin) Mosher of Shellsburg, IA; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Smith of Vancouver, WA; brothers-in-law, Robert Szabo of Castalia, Edward Szabo of Clermont, Eugene (Jean) Szabo of Postville, Victor Szabo of Castalia, Leon (Fayne) Szabo of Postville; sisters-in-law, Dianne (Bill) Buddenberg of Castalia, Betty Szabo of Postville, Nadine Szabo of Cedar Rapids, and many nieces and nephews.
