A. C. HAGEMEIER DEAD

Succumbed as He Stepped From Street Car on His Way to His Hotel in St. Paul

Word came to Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Slocum last Saturday morning that A. C. Hagemeier, Mrs. Slocum's uncle, had died in St. Paul very suddenly early that morning. The news was a shock to Mr. and Mrs. Slocum, as they had no intimation of any illness.

Subsequent developments disclosed the following facts: Mr. Hagemeier had been out on a trip and returned to St. Paul on a train that arrived shortly before one o'clock. He boarded a car to go to the Spaulding hotel, where he and Mrs. Hagemeier have been staying for several weeks. As he descended from the car he fell and when he did not get up those near by called an ambulance and he was taken to a police station where examination proved that he was dead.

Letters in his pocket gave his name and address, and he also carried his card as a member of the United Commercial Travelers' association. Not knowing that Mrs. Hagemeier was in the city, the secretary wired her at Decorah asking if her association could render any assistance. It was this message that gave the first news of Mr. Hagemeier's death. Confirmation of death was contained in another message that followed soon after from Herbert B. Haskell. Mr. Haskell saw an item in the Pioneer-Press telling of Mr. Hagemeier's end and went at once to see Mrs. Hagemeier. At the time of his arrival at the hotel she had not been advised of the happenings of the night.

Mr. and Mrs. Slocum departed for St. Paul on Saturday evening's train but were held at Calmar all day Sunday by the storm. Mr. Slocum continued the journey alone on Monday.

Mr. and Mr. Hagemeier have made their home in Decorah for the past thirty years, coming here from Allamakee county. During the earlier years of their residence here Mr. Hagemeier traveled for the Halladay Windmill Co., but during late years he has represented the Woodmansee Co. on the road. He covered a large territory and was accounted one of the best salesmen in his line in this territory. He was a member of the local Masonic, Elk and Knights of Pythias lodges, and took an active interest in the affairs of all, numbering many friends among their membership both at home and elsewhere.

In the bereavement that has come upon her so suddenly Mrs. Hagemeier has the sympathy of the community.

Adolph C. Hagemeier was born in Germany in 1854 and came to America with his parents when he was three years of age. He was married to Nettie Cowan in 1875. Besides his wife he is survived by two brothers and two sisters - Charles and Otto Hagemeier and Mrs. Kellison residing in Nebraska and Mrs. Branson of Burlington.

The remains were brought from St. Paul last evening. The funeral will be held to-morrow afternoon at three o'clock at the house, and interment will be made in Phelps cemetery. There are present from out of town to attend the funeral Mr. and Mrs. Branson of Burlington and W. B. Cowan and daughter, brother and niece of Mrs. Hagemeier, from Waukon.
