Arthur Art Cornelius
Arthur Art D. Cornelius, 72, of Waterville, died Monday, April 23, 2012, at his home in rural Waterville. Funeral services are Thursday, April 26, at 11 a.m. at Waterville Lutheran Church in Waterville, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial is at Waterville Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Honorary casketbearers are Bryan Phipps, Brittany People, Ciara Oder, Vanessa Phipps, Kaci Rausch, Alli Rausch, Sofia, Ana and Freddy Acosta. Arthur Dean Cornelius was born Jan. 20, 1940, in Decorah, to Ole and Myrtle (Boe) Cornelius. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Decorah and graduated from Decorah High School in 1958. He married Janice Faldet Feb. 20, 1960; they later divorced. He married Jean Phipps Nov. 17, 1990, at the Waterville Lutheran Church. Art was a life-long dairy and crop farmer. He farmed near Ridgeway from 1960 to 1986; later he relocated to Waterville, where he farmed the rest of his life. He was a past member of the NFO and enjoyed fishing and horses. Over the years he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and spent a lot of time fishing with his friends Jerome Bohr and Bob Frana, who are now both deceased.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Cornelius, of Waterville; three children: Michael Cornelius of Decorah, Rosean (Tom) Phipps of Waukon and Mindy Rausch of Ft. Atkinson; step-children, Tim (Vicky) Phipps of Dorchester, Roxanne (friend Roger Munson) Oder of Belmond and Renee (Bernardo) Acosta of Waterville; seven grandchildren: Mitch Cornelius of Dubuque, Marty Cornelius of Waterloo, Shelby Cornelius of Decorah; Brittany (Charles) People of Burnsville, Minn.; Bryan Phipps of Waterville; Allie and Kaci Rausch both of Ft. Atkinson; seven step-grandchildren: Troy Oder of Oelwein, Tyler Oder of Waterville, Ciara (friend Dominique Austin) Oder of Mason City; Vanessa Phipps of Dorchester; Sofia, Ana and Freddy Acosta all of Waterville; two great-grandchildren, Whitney and Lela People both of Burnsville, Minn.; one nephew, Curt Cornelius of Kansas City, Kan.; and three nieces: Keri Cornelius and Dawn (Richard) Mall both of Long Beach, Calif. and Pam (Todd) Schorzmann of Helena, Ala.; a former son-in-law, Dan Rausch of Ft. Atkinson; and a former daughter-in-law, Sue Macal of Decorah.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Andrew who died in infancy and a brother, Curt Cornelius.
