Evelyn Mae (Roney) Anderson was born May 30, 1930 in a rural farmhouse outside of Decorah to John and Pearl (Bender) Roney. The family moved into town when she was 12 so the children could attend high school. She was a graduate of Decorah High School, Class of 1948.

Evie was united in marriage to James R. Anderson on April 27, 1957 at First United Methodist Church in Decorah. They were blessed with two children, Kari and Michael.

Evie was a career employee of AT&T where she worked as a telephone operator. She developed many lifelong friendships and she retired in 1983 from the Oelwein Office. Evie loved to travel and starting as a young woman, she traveled extensively throughout the U.S. as well as Europe and the Far East. She wintered for several years at Edisto Beach, South Carolina.

During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Evie was the primary care-giver of her two young grand-daughters as her daughter was assigned to a Hospital Ship, the USNS COMFORT in the Persian Gulf and her son-in-law was assigned to an Atlantic Fleet Submarine, the USS TREPANG. She supported her “military-family’s” careers and enjoyed visiting them as they moved around the world.

Evie lived a full life. She enjoyed aquasize, walking, coffee with friends and bargain shopping. Even though she was known as someone who notoriously killed any and all plants, this didn’t stop Evie from joining the Town and Country Garden Club. Evie also enjoyed volunteering: from Meals-on-Wheels, to volunteering at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, working for decades at Nordic Fest, with the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Priscilla Circle at the First United Methodist Church, as well as other volunteer services at church. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church.

Evie was tragically taken by Alzheimer’s disease on Monday, December 3, 2012 after a battle of many years. Her last years were spent in the Memory Care Unit of Ossian Senior Hospice where the staff took loving care of her. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Marlys; and her son, Mike on September 4, 2012.

Left to cherish many wonderful memories are her husband of 55 years, Jim Anderson; her daughter, Kari (Rick) Winters of Kingsland, GA; her three grandchildren: Erin (Brian) Reynolds, Rachel Winters and Andrew Winters; three great-grandchildren: Sean, Allison and Caleb; her sister Audrey Smock of Coronado, CA; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Memorials may be given to Ossian Senior Hospice, 114 Fisher Ave., Ossian, IA 52161.
