Alice A Frey
Alice A. Frey, 102, of New Hampton, formerly of Lawler, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 12, 2011, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A Mass of Christian Burial was 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz celebrating the Mass. Alice’s two daughters placed the pall and presented the offertory gifts. Linda Manternach was the lector. Interment was in the church cemetery with Randy Miller, Mark Miller, Terry Miller, Kevin Miller, Andy Miller, Mark Wiltgen and Randy Hanson serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Friends greeted the family beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the church. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton was in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences for Alice’s family may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com.
Alice Ann Frey was born Nov. 20, 1908, on the Woldan family farm in rural Winneshiek County, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Zak) Woldan. At an early age, the family moved to Spillville, where Alice attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School. She received all her sacraments in the Catholic Faith. She married Ernest Phillip Frey Oct. 14, 1931, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic church in Spillville. To this union two daughters were born. The couple farmed near Little Turkey for 43 years. Alice and Ernie were partners in farming and did everything together, including gardening, playing cards, traveling and visiting with family. They were members of Assumption Parish in Little Turkey where Alice also sang in the church choir. In 1977 Ernie and Alice moved to Lawler and joined Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. In 1991 they celebrated their 60th anniversary. Ernie died March 7, 1995, at the age of 85. Alice was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and belonged to the Senior Citizens in Lawler and Little Turkey. She will be remembered by her family for the kolaches she made and the stories she told.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Fred) Miller of Independence and Kathleen (Ernie) Heying of Calmar; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter, Sandra Miller; one brother, Frank Woldan; and four sisters: Regina Soukup, Frances Frey, Alma Frana and Martha Klimesh.
