Sgt. Raphael Soukup Dies of Illness Overseas

Mr. and Mrs. James R. Soukup of near Ridgeway received word from the war department Friday that their son, Sgt. Raphael Soukup, died on July 30th. Mr. and Mrs. Soukup had been previously notified that their son was seriously ill in New Guinea. The last message indicated that he was in the Admiralty Islands.

Sgt. Soukup was 24 years old. He entered the army in October 1941, and went overseas in June, 1943. He was a radio man in the mechanized cavalry division. Mr. and Mrs. Soukup have two more sons in the service – Jerome in the navy and Daniel in the army.

Memorial mass was held for Sgt. Soukup in St. Wenceslaus church at Spillville this Wednesday morning.
