Jacob Butz

Funeral services for Jacob Butz, who passed away Thursday at Cresco hospital, were held at Ridgeway Methodist church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. The pastor, Rev. Frank Cass, officiated and interment was in the Ridgeway cemetery. The pallbearers were Henry Christen, Ross Kirschman, Morris Butz, Elmer Gilbertson, Lee Kecker and Frank Butz.

Jacob Butz, son of Theobold and Catherine Icstine Butz was born Oct. 7, 1856 in Ripley county, Ind. He came with his parents, brothers and sisters to Winneshiek county in 1865, in which county he continued to live until a few years ago when he went to Cresco to make his home with his daughter Mrs. Chas. Beucher. He passed away on March 15, 1944, at the Cresco hospital, following the paralytic stroke which he suffered five days before at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 8 days.

He was married Nov. 29, 1880 to Emma Reinhart and to them were born two daughters and four sons. A daughter Sarah, passed away in infancy; a son Ferdinand, ten years ago and his wife, June 6, 1925.

He is survied{sp} by one daughter, Ella, (Mrs. Chas. Beucher) of Cresco and three sons, Edward of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Louis of Cavour, S. D.; and Clarence of Ridgeway. There are ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Of his 12 brothers and sisters, Mrs. Geo. Brinkman of Waterloo alone survives. There are also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who mourn his departure.

Jacob Butz joined the Methodist church in his youth and was a faithful member always. During the last years when he was unable to attend church, he enjoyed radio church services at home.

Among those from a distance attending the funeral were: Edward Butz of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Louis Butz of Cavour, S. D.; Edna Butz of Chicago; Mrs. Mervin Battleson of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reinhart and Will Kuntz of Alta Vista; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Vatthauer of Lanesboro; Ed Kratz and Mrs. Sarah Schemmel of Decorah; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Brinkman of Waterloo, besides several from Cresco.
