Rev. John P. Broz
Rev. Father Broz, who retired two years ago as pastor of St. Wenceslaus church, Spillville, died Saturday morning June 29, following an extended illness. Father Broz was born Dec. 12, 1865 at Svihov, Czechoslovakia, where he attended the local school and Klotovv college. In 1884 he came to America and shortly afterward entered St. Joseph’s college, now Loras college, Dubuque. He was graduated on Nov. 2, 1889 from the Grand seminary, Montreal, Canada, and was ordained in the St. Raphael’s Cathedral at Dubuque by the Most Rev. Archbishop, John Hennessey.
He was appointed to the Spillville pastorate in 1914 and served until June 2, 1944, when he retired, but continued to make his home in Spillville to be near his former parishioners whom he served long and well.
Rev. Broz was first assigned as assistant pastor of St. Wenceslaus church, Cedar Rapids, and later was pastor at Duncan, Clutier and Protivin. In 1939 he celebrated his Golden Jubilee of the priesthood at Spillville, when the Most Rev. Francis J. L. Bechman, Archbishop of Dubuque and about 50 priests were present.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, July 2, with the Rev. Louis B. Kucera, bishop of Lincoln, Neb., singing the requiem mass. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
His soul has departed from its earthly habitation to enter the realm of eternity and receive the reward from His God to whom he dedicated his life 56 years ago in the service of the Priesthood. With a feeling of profound sadness we bid farewell today to our esteemed and beloved pastor emeritus, the Rev. John P. Broz.
