Father Courtney is Buried at His Old Home in Bluffton
Funeral services for Rev. Father John H. Courtney were held at Bluffton in Winneshiek county, Jan. 19, following services the day previous at Ottumwa, Iowa, where the Most Rev. Ralph L. Hayes, Bishop of Davenport, celebrated the solemn pontifical mass of requiem. Pallbearers at the Bluffton service were: Steve Sexton, Francis Donlan, Phil McCormick, Glenn Clark, Orvin Henry and John Carolan.
Father Courtney was born in Bluffton township, September 4, 1879, and was educated at St. Ambrose college and Kenrick seminary. He was ordained at St. Louis June 10, 1905, and served temporary assignments at Oskaloosa, Casey and Keokuk. He was made pastor of St. Joseph’s church, What Cheer, in 1906, went to Keokuk temporarily six years later, was pastor at St. James church, Toronto; St. Joseph’s, East Pleasant Plain; St. Bridget’s, Victor, and had been at Sacred Heart church Ottumwa, since 1934.
The only living member of Father Courtney’s immediate family is his brother, Michael Courtney of Bluffton.
