Mrs. Ellen Bernatz

Mrs. Ellen Bernatz, 86, highly respected pioneer resident of Spillville, passed peacefully away Thursday afternoon, April 12, 1945, at the Decorah hospital where she had been a patient for several weeks. Mrs. Bernatz was the former Ellen Theilich, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Theilich and was born at Decorah Oct. 4, 1858.

On Sept. 20, 1877, she was married to John Bernatz and since that time her home was made in Spillville.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at her home with the Rev. Bartter of Decorah officiating. A quartette, Dr. and Mrs. F. C. Swella and Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Andera sang hymns during the service. There were many beautiful offerings showing the high esteem in which she was held.

Her immediate survivors are her daughter Mrs. F. W. Mashek of Grand Forks, N. D., Fred Bernatz of Spillville and Herbert of Long Beach, Calif. Her husband and a son Edgar preceded her in death. Two sisters, Mrs. G. Oehler and Mrs. Frank Sheean, both of Decorah, also survive, as do a number of grandchildren.

The bereaved ones will miss her much because they were always the subject of her kind interest, solicitude, love and devotion. Sympathy is extended to her loved ones she leaves to mourn her passing.
