Spillville’s First Casualty

Relatives and friends here were grieved to learn of the death of Pvt. Clarence Bily, who gave his life for his country June 9, on Luzon. Clarence, who is 19 years old was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bily, and spent most of his life in Spillville from where he entered the service. The Bily family, who lived here until a year ago are now residents of Oelwein. Those who are left to mourn his untimely death are his parents, two sisters, Gladys and Dorothy, all of Oelwein, his grandmother, Mrs. Rose Soukup and Mrs. Mary Bily both of Spillville and many other relatives and friends who deeply mourn his passing. Sincere sympathy is extended to his loved ones.

Memorial Rites

Memorial services for Pvt. Clarence Bily, 19, who was killed in action on Luzon, on June 9, were held at St. Wenceslaus Catholic church here Tuesday morning July 3, at 9 o’clock with Rev. Joseph Badura, celebrating the memorial high mass and delivering the sermon. The veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion took part in the ceremonies. Pvt. Bily was born in Spillville June 12, 1926, where his boyhood days were spent. He attended the Spillville schools and the Calmar high school. At the time of his induction he was employed by the Joe Pavlovec Construction Co. He left here Oct. 24, 1944 for Camp Hood, Tex., and April 1 of this year he went overseas. Those left to mourn are his bereaved parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bily, two sisters, Gladys and Dorothy, all of Oelwein, two grandmothers, Mrs. Rose Soukup and Mrs. Mary Bily, both of Spillville and his many friends and relatives in this vicinity. The Bilys were residents of Spillville until a year ago when they moved to Oelwein.
