Former Howard Co. Man Killed By Auto

Funeral Services Are Being Held This Afternoon In Decorah

Will Thayer of Decorah, formerly of Howard county, was fatally injured when he was struck by an auto driven by Elmer Bergstrom of Decorah about three o’clock Sunday morning.

The accident occurred on the West Decorah bridge. Mr. Bergstrom rushed the injured man to the hospital but he died on the way without regaining consciousness.

According to testimony brought out at a coroner’s inquest later on Sunday, Mr. Bergstrom who is a traveling auditor for the Interstate Power Co., did not see Mr. Thayer because of the curve in the bridge until he was within 15 feet of him. The jury returned a verdict of “unavoidable accidental death.”

An examination of the body disclosed a brain concussion, fractured left leg, broken collar bone and other injuries.

Funeral services are being held this afternoon at the Olson-Iverson funeral home and at the Assembly of God Tabernacle, the Rev. Stanley H. Clarke, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Phelps cemtery{sp}. Mr. Thayer was 78 years old.
