John M. Herold

John M. Herold was born in Sumner township, Winneshiek county on April 21, 1857, and died at his home here Wednesday morning, February 24, 1937, after an illness of six months, due to a stroke which he suffered last September. He was first married to Rose Bader, who died many years ago. To them four children were born: Wilhelmina, (Mrs. A. A. Mikesh), Charles and John, deceased, and Mike of near Spillville.

In 1895 he was united in marriage with Katherine Kuhn. Eight children were born of this union: Theodore, Hubert and Frank of Spillville, Rose (Mrs. Raymond Beer) Festina; Mae, (Mrs. Richard Huber), Spillville; Amelia, (Mrs. Alphonse Wiltgen), Ossian, and Louis, who passed away almost three years ago. A daughter Pauline, died in infancy. Besides the widow and eight children he also leaves his aged brother, Phillip Herold of Cresco. Five brothers, Andrew, George, Henry, Barney and Michael, preceded him in death. He is also survived by thirty grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Herold spent about 32 years of their married life on their farm west of Spillville, which is now operated by their son Frank. In 1926 they retired from farm life and moved to their present home in Spillville.

The deceased was a devoted and faithful member of the Catholic church and attended mass daily up to the time he was stricken. This community has been deprived of a good genial friend and his family will miss the kindness and love of their dear husband and father. A large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral services which were held on Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at the St. Wenceslaus church conducted by Rev. V. J. Hlubek who read the mass of requiem and had charge of the burial services which were at the St. Clement’s cemetery south of town where his daughter and sons are buried that have preceded him in death.
