Mrs. Anton Balik

Thursday morning April 15, 1937, just after the Angelus bell announced the beginning of the day, the death bell tolled the knell for the parting soul of Mrs. Anton Balik who died at her home at Spillville after an illness of four months, during which time she was tenderly cared for by her family. The entire community was grieved by her untimely death and great sorrow and sadness fill the hearts of her widower and family for the voice of this mother is forever hushed. Her passing leaves a void in the home where she served her family so devotedly and took an unending joy in making it a beautiful and happy one. The deceased was a woman of true Christian character, who by her charity and ever ready sympathy endeared herself to almost countless friends, but it is in the home her loss will be most keenly felt. As Margaret Klimesh she was born Jan. 1, 1881, on a farm west of Spillville and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Klimesh. On June 18, 1901, she was married to Anton Balik at the St. Wenceslaus church. To this union eight children were born, all of whom survive. They are: Margaret, a teacher at Lewiston, Minn.; Viola (Mrs. Leo Carney) of Mason City; Irma (Mrs. George Ebert) of Iowa City; Marcella, R. N., who spent the past several months at home; Stanley, a student at the University of Minnesota; Mildred, a dietician at Salt Lake City, Utah, and Robert and Delores at home. Besides her widower and children she is also survived by four sisters: Mrs. Mary Truhler of St. Paul, Mrs. Victoria Vana of Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Josephine Kapinos and Lena Klimesh, both of Spillville, and one borther{sp} John Klimesh in Canada. Three brothers, Robert, Frank and Jos. Klimesh and one sister, Mrs. Anna Swella preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at the St. Wenceslaus church Monday April 19 at 10 o’clock. The Solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. J. P. Broz, with Rev. Jos. Vollmecke of Calmar as deacon, Rev. V J. Hlubek as Sub-Deacon and Rev. Jos. Badura of Little Turkey was Master of Ceremonies. Revs. Dostal of Ft. Atkinson and Ruzicka of Protivin were in the sanctuary. Rev. Broz delivered a sermon in the Bohemian language which was followed in English by Rev. Ruzicka. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery where those who preceded her in death are buried and where she too, now sleeps. The pall bearers were John, Frank, Joseph, Charles Celestine and Frank Klimesh, all nephews of the deceased. The many spiritual bouquets and beautiful floral offerings were evidence of the high esteem in which she was held.

The deceased was a devout Catholic, attending mass daily up to the time of her illness, and died fortified by the last rites of her faith.
