Services held for Mayme Vrba, 95

Funeral services for Mayme Vrba of Fort Atkinson were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25 at St. John’s Catholic Church at Fort Atkinson with Rev. John Moser officiating. Interment was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Ft. Atkinson. Pallbearers were: Doug Vrba, Dean Vrba, Ron Praska, Dan Praska, Dale Huinker, Mike Praska, Dave Huinker, and Francis Praska. Schluter Balik Funeral Home Chekal Chapel handled the arrangements.

Mayme, 95 died Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma following a short illness.

Mayme Sophie Vrba was born March 16, 1908 near Spillville, the daughter of Albert and Ann (Puffer) Hayek. Mayme attended St. John’s School in Fort Atkinson and a rural school in Winneshiek County.

On October 6, 1930 she married Adolph Vrba in Fort Atkinson.

Mayme was a homemaker and farm wife until 1956. She began doing housework at the Fred Figge home in Ossian and then worked for Helen Christenson in Decorah until she retired in 1976. In January of 2000, she moved to an apartment in Alma and then in April of 2001 she moved into Colonial Manor in Elma.

She was a member of St. John’s Guild. She enjoyed baking rolls, sugar cookies and kolaches.

She is survived by two daughters: Aileen Huinker of Calmar and Shirley Praska of Elma; 18 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Mayme was preceded in death by her husband Adolph on April 6, 1951; one son: Roger; one grandson; and her parents.
