Services held for M. Underbakke, 79

Funeral services for Maynard Ward Underbakke, 79, of Fountain, MN were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Root River Church of the Brethren with interment in the church cemetery. Rev. Frances Townsend officiated. Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston, MN, handled the arrangements.

Maynard died Monday, May 4, 1998 at his home.

He was born May 1, 1919 in Burr Oak Township, Iowa, the son of Louie and Violet (Wilber) Ward Underbakke. He attended Winneshiek County rural school Burr Oak #6 and graduated from Decorah High School.

In 1942 he obtained his degree in Forestry from Iowa State University in Ames. He worked for the U.S. Geodetic Survey in Baltimore, MD, before joining the Marine Corps and serving at Guam during WWII.

Maynard was married to Anna Bella Carr from 1945-1963. He worked for the US. Forest Service in Mississippi and in the Smokey Mountains Pisgah Forest of North Carolina until they moved to a dairy farm near Fountain in 1953; they began selling Christmas trees the following year.

Maynard was a Minnesota District Forester from 1955-1985. From 1963-1972 he was an appraiser for the Minnesota Hardwood Forest, obtaining land to start the project. As a forestry consultant and hardwood nursery operator, he helped people plant, raise and harvest trees.

In 1972 he married Marvel Mae Broadwater; she died in 1985. He continued to be a reforestation resource for the region and managed his consultation and nursery business until his recent illness.

Survivors include his four children: Bonita Ann of Fountain; Louis Larson of Denver, CO; Delon Robert of Madison, WI; and Maynard Michael of Rochester, MN; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and five siblings: Opal Underbakke of Burr Oak; Roberta Sever of Tower, MN; Robert Underbakke of Canton; Dale Underbakke of Burr Oak; and Shyrlee Hill of Ellsworth.
