Services held for John Shindelar on November 2
Funeral services for John Shindelar of Spillville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 2 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. Pallbearers were: Vince Frana, Bobby Wagner, Gary Shindelar, Edgar Shindelar, Ronnie Shindelar, Tom Wagner, Larry Shindelar, Charles Shindelar, and Edward Shindelar.
Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.John, 84, died Sunday, October 28, 2001 at his home in Spillville after a long illness.
John Alois Shindelar was born March 9, 1917, on the family farm south of Spillville, the son of John J. and Anna (Kruchek) Shindelar. He attended St. Wenceslaus School in Spillville. John and his mother helped his sister Anna raise her children.
On November 18, 1967 he married Beulah Peterson Moudry at St. Wenceslaus in Spillville.
He began working as a carpenter, helping local carpenters who were working on the family farm. He later worked with an uncle then with his brother-in-law until 1946. He then worked with or without a crew until 1996 when a stroke and a seizure put an end to his carpentry.
John began his musical career at an early age walking to and from school playing a button accordion. The only instrument he took lessons was the violin. For other instruments, John bought finger charts and taught himself to play the saxophone and clarinet. At age 11, he began playing with John Novak’s band. He played the clarinet in the parish orchestra, with some dance bands and the community band until 1964, when he cut the tips of three fingers on his right hand. He played accordion and drums with Ray’s Old Timers from 1968-1983. He played with many other bands and at many wedding and anniversary dances.
In the late 60s John and Beulah started playing for parties and at rest homes. The last gig was September 13, 2001.
He is survived by his wife Beulah of Spillville; one son: John O. Shindelar of Temecula, CA; two daughters: Cozette Pearson of Omaha, NE and Grace Barloon of Rochester, MN; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother: Alois of Ft. Atkinson.
John was preceded in death by one granddaughter; his parents; three sisters: Anna Wagner, Agnes Frana and Pauling Vsetecka; and one brother: V.J. Shindelar.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Organist was Doris Thompson and soloist was Dan Silhacek.
Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Spillville with Vince Frana, Bobby Wagner, Gary Shindelar, Edgar Shindelar, Ronnie Shindelar, Tom Wagner, Larry Shindelar, Charles Shindelar and Edward Shindelar as casketbearers.
Balik Funeral Home, Spillville was in charge of arrangements.

Conklin's German Band. He also played at many wedding and anniversary dances and with bands at the Inwood in Spillville. In his later years he played with local community bands of Spillville, Ft. Atkinson, Calmar and Protivin until all these combined to play at the Wednesday night concerts at Ft. Atkinson. In the late 60's John and Beulah started playing for parties and at rest homes.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah; one son, John O. (Cristie) Shindelar, Temecula, CA; two daughters, Cozette (John) Pearson, Omaha, NE and Grace (James) Barloon, Rochester, MN; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Alois Shindelar, Ft. Atkinson and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Anna Wagner, Agnes Frana and Pauline Vsetecka; one brother V.J. (Vaclav) Shindelar; one granddaughter, Keri Lynne Barloon and a niece, Edna Wagner Kaufman.
