John Hovden, 78, services held

Funeral services for John Hovden, 78, were held May 30 at 2:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with interment at Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen officiated. Pallbearers were David Dvorak, Greg Hovden, Bruce Hovden, Curt Faldet, Kenny Knutson and Harold Lee. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John died May 23, 1998.

John Kendall Hovden was born December 28, 1920 in Madison Township, the son of Carl and Alida (Knutson) Hovden. He was baptized January 23, 1921 and confirmed in 1936 in the Madison Lutheran Church. He graduated from Ridgeway High School.

John was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII and Korea. He was a life member of Helof Holm V.F.W. Post #1977.

He retired from farming and worked for Nelson Drilling Co. and Holland Bros. as a dragline operator.

John was formerly married to Junice Thompson of Ridgeway, who now resides in Tempe, AZ.

Survivors include one son, John Hovden of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Jane Stenerson of Grove City, OH; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Carsten Hovden of Decorah; and one sister, Genevieve Dvorak of Decorah.

John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joy Hovden.
