Services held for Gene Gerleman

Funeral services for Gene Gerleman of Fort Atkinson were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 15, , at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Rev. Robert Ament officiating. Interment was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson. Pallbearers were: Darin Barta, Dale Roethler, Dave Roethler, Jim Scally, Steve Sindelar, and Jamison Holthaus. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gene, 68, died Monday, November 12, 2001 at his home from a short courageous battle from cancer.

Gene Gerleman was born January 22, 1933 near St. Lucas, the son of Joseph and Rose (Langreck) Gerleman. Gene attended country school near Little Turkey and then graduated from St. Lucas Catholic School in St. Lucas. He served in the US Army in England from 1953-1955.

On April 26, 1958 he married Joanne Kupka at St. John’s Catholic church in Fort Atkinson. He returned to the area and worked several jobs. Gene then worked for the Secondary Roads Department of Winneshiek County mowing for the last fifteen years.

He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the Huber-Steffes American Legion Post #672 of Fort Atkinson.

Gene was an avid sports fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Detroit Lions and the racecar driver Jeff Gordon.

He is survived by his wife Joanne of Fort Atkinson; two daughters: Pat Tussler of Fort Atkinson and Pam Severson of Calmar; seven sons: Dan of LaCrosse, WI, Ken of West Union, Tom of Thornton, Bob of Newton, Jamie of Calmar, Tim of LaCrosse, WI, and Ron of Calmar; 13 grandchildren; two sisters: Jovina Scally of New Hampton and Veronica Roethler of Alta Vista; and two brothers: Gilbert of Charles City and Joe of Rockford, MN.

Gene was preceded in death by one granddaughter, his parents; and two brothers: Alfred and Herman.

FORT ATKINSON - Gene Gerleman, 68, Fort Atkinson, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 at his home from cancer.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. John's Catholic Church, Fort Atkinson at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 15 with Rev. Robert Ament presiding. Lector was Laure Rausch and mass servers were Casey McKone, Joey and Matthew Boyer. Rita Schmitt was organist, accompanying Daryl Luzum as soloist. Hymn selections included "Be Not Afraid", "Prayer of St. Francis", "Here I Am Lord", "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". Offertory gifts were presented by Kendra, Andy, Brian and Kayla Gerleman and Brady Severson.
Interment was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Fort Atkinson with Military Rites provided by Huber-Steffes American Legion Post #672. Casketbearers were Darin Barta, Dale Roethler, Dave Roethler, Jim Scally, Steve Sindelar and Jamison Holthaus.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne; two daughters, Pat (Brian) Tussler, Fort Atkinson and Pam (Alan) Severson, Calmar; seven sons, Dan Gerleman and friend Christi, LaCrosse, WI, Ken (Ann) Gerleman, West Union, Tom (Dawn) Gerleman, Thornton, Bob (Terri) Gerleman, Newton, Jamie (Carol) Gerleman, Calmar, Tim Gerleman, LaCrosse, WI and Ron Gerleman, Calmar; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Jovina Scally, New Hampton and Veronica Roethler, Alta Vista; two brothers, Gilbert (Celine) Gerleman, Charles City and Joe (Rita) Gerleman, Rockford, MN; several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one granddaughter, Gabrielle Gerleman and two brothers, Alfred and Herman Gerleman.
Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel, Fort Atkinson was in charge of arrangements.
