Hugo Gerleman services held

Funeral services for Hugo Gerleman of Ossian were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian with Msgr. Cletus J. Hawes officiating. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. The family placed the pall. Honorary pallbearers were: Veronica Colvin, Anthony Kegamann, Brenda Elsner, John Gerleman, Lisa Gerleman, Kaitlin Gerleman, Jennifer Ward, Megan Neuzil, and Aaron Neuzil. Pallbearers were: Tyler and Jason Kagemann, Joshua, Danielle and Eric, Kris and Kymm Gerleman. Schmitz Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Hugo, 80, died Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, where he has lived since April 1, 1999.

Hugo John Gerleman was born October 22, 1922 in the St. Lucas area, the son of Aloysius and Rose (Tillman) Gerleman. He received his education at St. Lucas.

Hugo was inducted into the Armed Forces during WW II and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre until his discharge in 1946. He received the victory Medal, Occupation Medal and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.

On April 20, 1948 he married Leona M. Geling at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. They lived on a farm in the Ossian area until they moved into Ossian in 1994.

Hugo was a member of the American Legion, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, and an honorary member of its’ Rosary Society.

He enjoyed watching birds, playing cards, gardening, playing ball, fishing, hunting squirrels, and pitching horseshoes.

He is survived by his wife Leona; nine children: Elizabeth Gerleman of Davenport, Duane of Monona, Loraine Kagermann of DeWitt, Dennis of Decorah, Dale of Ossian, David of Plainfield, Daniel of Spillville, Dean of Chippewa Falls, and Mary Ann Neuzil of Cresco; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Virgil of Ft. Atkinson and Jim of Charles City; and one sister: Agnes Galligan of Lawler.

Hugo was preceded in death by one granddaughter; his parents; three brothers: Edmond, Rev. LaVerne, and Matt; and one sister: Theola Lechtenberg.

Transmitter’s Note: There are three different spellings: Kagermann, Kegamann, Kagemann in this obituary. According to DeWitt phone directory Kagemann is correct spelling.
