Services held for Irvin Engbretson

Funeral services for Irvin Engbretson of Decorah were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 at the Madison Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Rev. Ginny Olson officiating. Interment was in Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Decorah. Pallbearers were: Dennis and Dean Larson, Bruce and Dean Witzke, Ted Kjosa, Richard, Kenneth and Robert Engbretson, and Virgil Kellison. Honorary pallbearers were: Helof-Holm VFW Chapter #1977, Bernatz-Symonds Am. Legion Post #163, Hamre-Giesen DAV Post #8, and Decorah I.O.O.F. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Irvin, 88, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah where he had been a resident since December.

Irvin Raymond Engbretson was born June 16, 1914 in Bluffton Twp., the son of Engbret and Minnie (Gilbertson) Engbretson. He was baptized July 12, 1914 and confirmed May 26, 1929 at Madison Lutheran Church. He attended Madison Twp. School and Decorah High School. Irvin then worked as a farm hand for area farmers. On March 26, 1941 he joined the US Army serving in Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He was wounded on February 4, 1944 and was sent back to the States to McAlester, OK.

On February 9, 1945 he married Marjorie Houston at McAlester. Upon returning to Iowa, they ran a restaurant in Cedar Rapids for a short time before moving back to Winneshiek Co. to farm west of Decorah until moving to town in 1990. During this time Irvin drove a lime truck, gas truck, and worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation, and the Decorah Water Department.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, sports, making novelties, and he played in a band.

He is survived by one daughter: Carol Sue Engbretson of Decorah.

Irvin was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie; his parents; two brothers: Elmer and Theodore; and three sisters: Leora Witzke, Emma and Gladys Engbretson.
