Services held for Alfred “Jake” Balk

Funeral services for Alfred “Jake” Balk were held Thursday, August 14, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Milaca with the Rev. Kevin Dunn officiating. The Peterson-Johnson Funeral Home of Milaca handled the arrangements.

Alfred “Jake” Balk died Monday, August 11, 1997 at Fairview Northland Regional Hospital in Princeton.

Jake was born April 28, 1910 to Matthew and Theresa (Schoeble) Balk in Ridgeway, where he grew up and attended school. Jake helped on the family farm for many years. He then managed a gas station until he went to work for Hormel Foods in Austin, MN.

On June 12, 1965 Jake was united in marriage to June Day at the Methodist Church in Milaca. The couple made their home in Milaca. Jake was the drummer for his band, “The Melody Ramblers.” They played in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. He was also active with a local and a national camping club.

Survivors include his wife, June; one daughter, Linda Beer of Cook, MN; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Elaine; three brothers; and four sisters.
