Leonard J. Schlee

Leonard J. Schlee, 88, of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa.

Leonard, son of John and Elizabeth (Warnholz) Schlee was born on July 25, 1913 near Clermont, Iowa. Leonard attended country school near Clermont. He also attended the Rosa Country School north of Ossian and Ossian Public School.

He worked at the Farmer's Coop and for area farmers. On January 6, 1936 he was united in marriage to Olivia Zweibohmer at St. Frances DeSales Catholic Church. They farmed near Ossian until 1954 when they purchased a farm west of Mabel, MN. From 1961-1971 they owned and operated the Hi-Way Lanes Bowling Alley in Postville, then returned to rural Decorah until 1997 when they moved into Decorah. Leonard enjoyed attending farm auctions and going fishing. He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church.

Surviving Leonard is Olivia, his wife of 66 years; one son, John (Jean) Schlee of Postville; seven daughters: Audrey Halverson, Juanita Bruening and Sharon Needles, all of Decorah; Judy Bruening, Lois (Ken) Halverson and Kathy Schierholz, all of Colorado Springs, CO; and Betty (Ervin) Kirchner, Bloomington, MN; twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Leonard is preceded in death by her parents; his twin daughters, Joan Catherine and Jane Carol; his sister Margaret Kipp; 2 brothers, Willard and Lawrence Schlee; and one son-in-law, Wes Halverson.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, March 30, 2002, at St. Benedict's Catholic Church with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Casket bearers were Steven Schlee, Mike Halverson, Wayne Halvorson, Bob Halvorson, Jack Halverson, Randy Halverson, David Bruening, Scott Carolan, Ken Halvorson, Jr., Ryan Schierholz and Joey Needles. Interment was at St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Leonard Schlee services held
Funeral services for Leonard Schlee of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30 at St. Benedicts’s Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Interment was in St. Benedict’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Decorah. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Leonard, 88, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah after a short illness.
He is survived by his wife Olivia of Decorah; one son: John of Postville; seven daughters: Audrey Halverson of Decorah, Lois Halvorson of Colorado Springs, CO, Juanita Bruening of Decorah, Judy Bruening of Colorado Springs, Betty Kirchner of Bloomington, MN, Kathy Schierholz of Colorado Springs, and Sharon Needles of Decorah; 22 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
