FATALLY INJURED IN AUTO-TRAIN COLLISION

Arthur Morgan, Son of Cresco Residents, Killed Last Friday

Arthur Morgan, 31, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Morgan of Cresco, was fatally injured and his companion, Lyle Ernster, 24, was critically injured Friday afternoon in Waterloo when Ernster’s car in which they were riding was struck by a Rock Island freight train. The accident happened on the Vaughan street crossing hear the Galloway Co.’s plant at 4:20 o’clock. Both men were employed in the company’s spreader assembly department.

Died Friday
Mr. Morgan died at 6:00 o’clock Friday evening in Allen’s Memorial hospital of skull fracture and shock. Mr. Ernster’s chest was crushed, his jaw fractured and he received lacerations and a possible skull fracture.

Ernster was thrown from the car and Morgan was pinned in the front seat. The front door next to him was caved in badly.

The body was brought to the Olson & Iverson funeral home at Decorah and on Monday afternoon funeral services were held in the Methodist church, the Rev. F. H. Weed, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial was in the Phelps cemetery at Decorah.

Attended Funeral
Attending the funeral from Cresco were deceased’s parents and the following friends: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Daughenbaugh, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Eaton, Mrs. Mary Marsh, Anna Jensen, Mrs. Leroy Salisbury, Will Brierly.

The Waterloo Courier gives the following life sketch of deceased. “Arthur Stewart Morgan was born May 18, 1909, at Grinnell, Ia., son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Morgan. The family moved in 1915 to Decorah, where he attended public schools, graduating from Decorah high school in 1927. He later attended Luther college, Decorah, where he was a member of the varsity wrestling team.

Married in Vinton
“He was married May 31, 1940, at Vinton, Ia., to Miss Hazel Seegmiller, of Dysart, and they came to Waterloo during the autumn.

“Surviving are the widow; his parents, now at Cresco, Ia., two brothers, Robert, Omaha, Neb.; and Frank, Charlottesville, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Paula Dotseth, Decorah; Mrs. Virginia Dahle, Mabel, Minn., and Miss Dorothy Morgan, Chicago.”

Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Morgan operate the West Side grocery on Market street.
