Dorisgene Winger, age 84, of Decorah, Iowa, died Thursday, June 5, 2008 at Wellington Place in Decorah following a long illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Paul Jordahl with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Monday June 9 at Fjelstul Funeral Home, and after 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church.

Dorisgene (Doerr) Winger was born January 6, 1924 at her family farm near Burr Oak, Iowa, the daughter of John E. and Gina (Espeseth) Doerr. She was baptized at home on January 27, 1924 and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She attended Decorah Public School and graduated from Decorah High School in 1941. She attended Luther College’s two-year Teacher Preparatory Program and then earned her B.A. degree by attending summer school. Dorisgene taught mostly second grade in Ridgeway, Calmar and Decorah, Iowa for a total of 33 years, retiring on May 28, 1976.

She was united in marriage to Lloyd H. Winger on December 28, 1960 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Pastor Alvon Nelson.

Dorisgene was a member of First Lutheran Church and worked in the Church Library for 15 years. She enjoyed decorating Christmas trees with crocheted and handmade ornaments and had as many as 20 decorated trees in her home. She also enjoyed teaching Social Dancing and tap dancing to many people. Dorisgene spent the last years of her life at Wellington Place where she did a lot of art projects including painting pictures, making bulletin boards and doing crossword puzzles. Dorisgene’s philosophy for life was “Make the best with what you’ve got!”

Dorisgene became a resident of Wellington Place on August 30, 2004.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd on August 30, 1994; four brothers-in-law: Oscar K. Winger, Orville C. Winger, Stanley G. Winger and Edward H. Winger; and an aunt, Amelia Hjelmeland.

Dorisgene is survived by her sister, Arlawayne (Arly) C. Rosendahl of Decorah; two nephews: Keith (Nancy) Rosendahl of Decorah and Brian (Carla) Rosendahl of Holt, MO; a niece, Donna (Norman) Zimmerman of Monticello, IA; a cousin, David (Margaret) Hjelmeland of Cary, NC; and a sister-in-law, Aggie Winger of Decorah.
