Dorothy E. Winger, age 89, of Decorah, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah.
A Celebration of her Life Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 12, 2007 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Friends may call after 1:00 P.M. on Sunday at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy Elizabeth Winger was born February 18, 1918 in Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Leseth) Lee. She was raised by her mother and stepfather Clarence Olson. She was baptized on June 2, 1918 at Decorah Lutheran Church and later confirmed on December 18, 1932 at Hauge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. She graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1935.
She was united in marriage to Lester Kenneth Winger on February 3, 1940 at the parsonage of First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. T.A. Hoff. This union was blessed with four children: Sandra, Susan, Stephen and Sharon.
Dorothy taught in a Country School for 3½ years prior to her marriage. She worked as an aide at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah for 15 years and then worked in the physical therapy department at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital for 17 years and retired at the age of 75.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Dorothy’s life centered around her family and her faith. She was an avid reader of history and fiction. As her eyesight failed she continued to enjoy books on audio.
Dorothy became a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home on December 14, 2004.
Survivors include her four children and their families, Sandra and her husband Ronald Koester of West Des Moines, IA, Susan and her husband Dennis Wepler of Eau Claire, WI, Stephen and his wife Wanda of Decorah, and Sharon and her husband Max Hines of Clinton, IA; six grandchildren, Jay Koester, Kaylee (Mark) Deegan, Stephanie (Jeff) Schemberger, Cory (Kolice) Koester, Chad (Erica) Winger and Alison (Paul) Peterson; seven great grandchildren, Karley Deegan, William Peterson, Adison Koester, Thomas Peterson, Sophie Schemberger, Alex Deegan and Chloe Schemberger.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Les on October 23, 1981 and three sisters.
