Helen Irene Turnquist was born July 15, 1920, in Troy Township near Prairie du Sac, Sauk County, WI, the daughter of Bruce and Selma Agnes (Hosig) McCready. She attended rural schools through the 8th grade and then graduated from Prairie du Sac High School with the class of 1938. After graduation Helen moved to Madison, WI. She grew up on a farm but lived most of her adult life in Madison.

Helen was united in marriage to Arthur Turnquist on October 16, 1948. To this union one child was born: Nancy. Helen worked in offices as a young woman but she really enjoyed the restaurant business. She worked at several restaurants, including Crandall’s Restaurant in Madison where she spent the last 26 years of her working life, finally retiring at the age of 70.

She enjoyed watching all sorts of sporting events local, college and professional. Her husband, Art, was a sports fan as well and many of their evenings were spent at local softball diamonds. She also enjoyed playing golf with her family and friends. After moving to Decorah in 1993, she attended virtually every sporting event in which her grandsons participated as well as other games. She was known affectionately by her grandsons’ friends as “Grandma Marx.”

Helen was a member of East Madison Baptist Church in Madison, WI. She was always very involved in church services and activities, singing in the choir, playing piano and organ, and volunteering her time whenever she was needed.

Helen was a resident of Ossian Senior Hospice since 2002, where she received great, loving care. She will always be remembered by those who knew her as a very unselfish lady who would do anything she could to help others and always be there for them. A wonderful wife, mother and grandmother – a role model for all. Unfortunately she did not really get to know her great-grandchildren due to Alzheimer’s disease.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy (Steve) Marx of Decorah; grandsons, Dan (Mary) Marx of Decorah, and Bob Marx of Plymouth, MN; and great-grandchildren, James and Will Marx of Decorah and a brother, Cecil McCready of Prairie du Sac, WI.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Art; her parents, Bruce & Agnes; and her sister-in-law, Rosina.
