Bernice Coretta Tweed, daughter of Martin O. Field (Fjeld) and Ida Josephine (Finsaas) Field was born September 10, 1906, on a farm in Fertile Township, Worth County, Joice, Iowa. She was baptized October 14, 1906 into the Lutheran faith by the Reverend Hans Edwin Fosnes at the Fertile Lutheran Church, Fertile, Iowa, and confirmed her faith at a later date. She was the oldest of six sisters and one brother. Her formal education was received in rural schools in Fertile Township and at the Fertile High School, Fertile, Iowa from which she graduated with the class of 1924. She was privileged to attend the 50th anniversary of her high school class in the year 1974. She attended several college summer school sessions and received credentials at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa and Estherville, Iowa, which qualified her to teach in rural schools in Fertile Township.

On December 22, 1926 she married Andrew Martin Tweed of rural Joice, Iowa at the Lutheran parsonage in Mason City, Iowa, officiated by the Rev. L. K. Tollefson. They farmed all of their married life. To this union they were blessed with a family of one daughter and three sons: Syvilla, Maynard, Gerald, and Kerry.

Bernice was an active farm wife and homemaker, and they were very involved in the life of the church to which they belonged, the Beaver Creek Lutheran, rural Joice, Iowa, and in the lives of their children. Foremost in the lives of Martin and Bernice was the education of their children.

Following the death of her husband, Martin, on September 24, 1959, at the age of 58 from cancer, Bernice moved to the city of Decorah, Iowa in 1962 to be near her daughter and family. She worked as a supervisor in the dining services at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, for eleven years and at the Aase Haugen Home, Decorah, Iowa, for nine years. She was a volunteer and was honored for her involvement in the Retired Senior Volunteers Program (RSVP) for many years.

After moving from the Tweed farm to Decorah in 1962, Bernice became an associate member of the Decorah Lutheran Church and a full member in 2000 with the closing on September 10, 2000, of the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice, Iowa, as an official congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Bernice became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa on November 8, 2005. This became her home and was where she celebrated her 100th and 101st birthdays. She was an expert in Norwegian baking, and her hobbies included the art of embroidery and hand quilting. She also had a special interest in family history and a visit to Valdres, Norway in 1971 was a highlight of her life. All her grandparents immigrated from Norway and the rich heritage of her paternal Fjeld family was a special interest of hers.

Throughout her life, she was a kind, gracious, and caring person with a wonderful sense of humor. She was blessed with a special gift of memory throughout all her years and she was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Martin O. and Ida Finsaas Field; her husband, Martin Tweed on September 24, 1959; four sisters: Evelyn Kingland of Forest City, Iowa, Mildred Slattum of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Antoinette Brodigan of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Palma Johnson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one brother: Marlin Field; one grandson-in-law: Robert P. Sykes, Underwood, Iowa; and one infant great- grandson, Matthew Robert Sykes.

Bernice is survived by her daughter and husband, Syvilla and Marlin Bolson, Decorah, Iowa, her three sons and their wives, Maynard and Violet Tweed of Ames, Iowa, Gerald and Shirley Tweed of Renton, Washington, Kerry and Ramona Tweed of Estacada, Oregon; twelve grandchildren: Priscilla Carraway, Loren Bolson, Lynn (Melissa) Bolson, Marica (Ed) Dowling, Cheryl (Steve) Stolmeier, Kolleen (David) Sogard, Randall Tweed, Bradley Tweed, Kiera Tweed, Cory Tweed, Ryan Tweed, and Rebecca Tweed; twenty-one great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Almelien of Joice, Iowa; and a sister-in-law: Eileen Field, Belmond, Iowa.

Blessed be her memory. Gud Alen Aeren (God Alone Honor) are the words above the altar at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to the Aase Haugen Home, Decorah, Iowa or the Beaver Creek Lutheran Cemetery Association, Joice, Iowa.
