Leonard V. Triska was born on February 15, 1927, the son of Albert and Rose (Havel) Triska on the family farm between Spillville and Ridgeway, Iowa. When he was six months old, his father had an accident that caused the family to move to Spillville, where Leonard attended St. Wenceslaus School until 7th grade. They returned to the farm and Leonard completed two more years at country school. He farmed with his father until 1949, when he married Ardith Schissel. They were married on June 20, 1949, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. To this union, six daughters were born: Ruth, Julie, Terri, Pat, Sandy and Dianne. Due to a back injury, Leonard rented out the farm and accepted a job as a Member Services Specialist for Wisconsin Dairies. In 1979, they moved to Decorah and he retired in 1992, at the age of 65. Leonard was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church while in the Spillville area and a current member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. He was an usher, greeter and did volunteer work for the parish. He served on the board of directors for the Winneshiek Co-op for nine years, the advisory board at the Decorah State Bank and NICC Dairy Board. Leonard also volunteered at the Winneshiek Medical Center, the Aase Haugen Nursing Home and as a cancer driver. Leonard was an avid card player and enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends. He also liked going fishing and having coffee with his coffee club at McDonalds. Most of all, Leonard loved and cared for his family.
