Marvin L. Thompson, age 80, of Ridgeway, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at James A. Haley Veterans' Nursing Home in Tampa, Florida.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 6, 2006 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway by Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson, with burial in United Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ridgeway. Full Military Honors will be accorded by Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977, Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163, D.A.V. Hamre-Giesen Chapter No. 8 and AMVETS Post No. 96

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Sunday, February 5, 2006 at Fjelstul Funeral Home with a V.F.W. memorial service at 6:30 P.M., and after 10:00 A.M. Monday at the church.

Marvin Louis Thompson was born January 14, 1926 at home in Ridgeway, Iowa, the son of Sander and Ellen (Guttormson) Thompson. He was baptized on February 7, 1926 at Ridgeway United Lutheran Church and later confirmed at Ridgeway United Lutheran Church. He graduated from Ridgeway High School with the Class of 1943.

Marvin entered the United States Army on April 6, 1944 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was a medical technician and served in Rhineland and Central Europe during World War II. He was Honorably Discharged on April 21, 1946 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Marvin reenlisted in the United States Army on December 20, 1946 at Fort Snelling. He served as a medical technician with the 511th Airborne in the United States and Japan and earned the rank of Corporal. He was Honorably Discharged on December 6, 1949 at Camp Campbell, Kentucky.

Marvin was united in marriage to Katie L. Parchman on September 1, 1951 in Shannon, Mississippi. To this union, three children were born: Greg, Judy and Mark.

The couple made their home in St. Louis, Missouri and Marvin worked at the Elder Manufacturing Co. After moving to Ridgeway, Iowa he was employed at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo, Iowa, and then Atherton Hatchery in Decorah. He later began working as an Inspector for the Iowa State Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures division. He was responsible for the northeast quadrant of Iowa and retired after 24 years of service.

Marvin was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway; Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977 and Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163 of Decorah and the St. Louis Masonic Lodge. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed working in his garden and yard. Marvin also liked to play golf and horseshoes; he enjoyed fishing, dancing; and collecting coins and toys. Marvin and Katie have spent the winter months in Zephyrhills, Florida since 1997.

Marvin died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Nursing Home in Tampa, Florida at the age of 80 years.

Survivors include his loving wife of fifty four years, Katie of Ridgeway, IA; three children, Greg (Marlene) Thompson of Maple Grove, MN, Judy (Donald) Berglund of Odessa, FL, and Mark Thompson of Shakopee, MN; two grandchildren, Ross and Sara Thompson; a great grandchild, Jordan Thompson; a sister, Edna Engebretson of Clear Lake, IA, and many nephews and nieces.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Junice Casson.

Memorials may be directed to the Peace Lutheran Church, Ridgeway, Iowa or the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, 13000 Bruce B Downs Blvd, Tampa, Florida 33612.
