Gregory was born September 24th, 1970 in Decorah, Iowa to Darla and the late Edward Thorland, joining his 18 month old brother, Erik.

Gregg, as he was often called, was baptized and confirmed at Good Shepherd Lutheran church where he attended Sunday school, sang in the junior choir, and participated in the worship and fellowship of the church.

Gregory was gregarious. He was a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky boy, who was a delight to be around. Gregg liked being active, whether biking, climbing trees, hiking in the woods, or picking “black caps” along Coon Creek. He excelled in gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do, and Frisbee golf. While Gregg was very athletic, he wasn’t highly competitive; he preferred activities “just for the fun of it”. Gregg enjoyed spending time with his family. He cherished the many trips to his paternal grandparents’ Iowa farm for holidays and special occasions. He also enjoyed family trips to Western Montana where he could fish and hike in the mountains near his maternal grandparents’ wilderness cabin. He and his brother Erik were fast friends growing up and shared many adventures together.

Gregg was kind, gentle, and generous to a fault. He was light-hearted and could find humor in any situation. He especially enjoyed spending time with his friends and listening to music.

After his father’s death in 1985, Gregg began to lose his way. Early in 1992 he suffered a traumatic brain injury which left him unable to manage his life well and he struggled to find a comfortable setting in which to live. He traveled often and was proud that he had crisscrossed the country several times.

In June, he attended his grandmother’s funeral in Montana. He was delighted to reunite with family, meet his nephew for the first time, and spend one glorious day at that wilderness cabin again.

Gregory is survived by his mother, Darla Thorland; his brother, Erik (Cynthia) Thorland; his nephew, Boden Thorland; his Aunts and Uncles, Gloria (Don) Nicol of Spokane Valley, Washington, Rodney (Lynda) Thorland of Shoreview, Minnesota, JoAnn (Tony) Onnen of Cokato, Minnesota; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.

Blessed be the memory of Gregory Harold Thorland.
