Karla Steffans, age 51, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, April 6, 2009, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.
Friends may call from 2:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. There will be a rosary at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon.
Karla Jean (Hageman) Steffans was born on October 26, 1957, the daughter of Ermin and Cleon (Timp) Hageman in Decorah, Iowa. Karla graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1976. She married Donald Steffans on April 23, 1977 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa. Karla worked at Camcar from 1976-78 and stayed home with her children after they were born. After they went to school, she then worked at Pamida in the shoe department, Wapsie Produce and at Wal-Mart for the past 15 years. Karla enjoyed going to the Cranberry Festival in Warrens, WI, taking care of her flowers, collecting teapots, Boyd’s bears and going shopping. Karla and Don would like to adventure to Bristol, TN for the NASCAR race, which Karla didn’t like to do, but she did it for her husband. But Don evened it out by taking Karla to Boyd’s Bears in Pigeon Forge, TN. Above all, Karla loved her husband, children and her precious grandchildren. Karla adored her four granddaughters especially spending time watering flowers and putting puzzles together with them. Most of all she loved to spoil them with shopping trips and Whippy Dip treats. Karla was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and St. Mark’s Circle.
Karla is survived by her husband: Donald Steffans, Decorah, IA. Two children: Melissa (Chad) Moeller, Monona, IA and Mike (April) Steffans, Calmar, IA. Four grandchildren: Amber & Jade Moeller and Brooke & Delaney Steffans. Karla’s mother: Cleon Hageman, Calmar, IA. Four sisters: Karen Dallenbach, Decorah, IA; Kathy (Alan) Johnson, Postville, IA; Kris (Leonard Panos, Jr.) Lowery, Decorah, IA and Kim (Randy) Tieskoetter, Ossian, IA. Karla’s mother-in-law: Wilma Steffans, Clermont, IA. One sister-in-law: Ruth Larson, Clermont, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Greg Steffans, Sommerset, KY and Richard (Nikki) Steffans, Postville, IA. Fifteen nieces and nephews: Jennifer Dallenbach, Michele (Cory) Huinker, Amanda (Jesse) Peterson, Bryan Lowery, Cory (Jeanne) Lowery, Jason, Corey, Kyle and Kayla Tieskoetter, Cody Steffans, Marty Larson, Zach, Mitchell, Jacob and Isaac Steffans. Four great nieces and nephews: Cody Huinker, Taylor Peterson, Brady Peterson, and Nicholas Lowery, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Karla was preceded in death by her father: Ermin Hageman in 2001. Her father-in-law: Donald Steffans in 2007. Four brothers-in-law: Gary Steffans in infancy; Randy Dallenbach in 1997; Dave Lowery in 2005 and Roger Steffans in 2006.
