Roy F. Steele, age 87, of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at Wellington Place in Decorah.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 29, 2007 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday, June 28, 2007 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and also on Friday after 8:30 A.M.
Roy Fredrick Steele was born March 21, 1920 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Lawrence E. and Clara V. (Reckward) Steele. He was educated in Winneshiek and Clayton County Country Schools. Roy was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah.
He was united in marriage to Marian J. Quam on September 27, 1941 at Rev. Bodahmer’s parsonage in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. This union was blessed with four children: Sandra, James, Michael and Russell.
Roy worked as a mechanic for many years, beginning with trucks and then autos. He worked for Hans Opsahl for 16 years and then for several other garages in Decorah and finished his career working for Weis Buick for 15 years, retiring in 1985.
His memberships include First Lutheran Church where he served as an usher for 15 years.
Roy became a resident of Wellington Place on March 13, 2007. He died there on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at the age of 87 years.
He is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Marian of Decorah; their four children, Sandra Douglas of Gardner, KS, James and his wife Mary Ann of Fairborn, OH, Michael and his wife Norma of Forest City, IA and Russell and his wife Diane of Clive, IA; eleven grandchildren, Carissa (Stephen) Headley, Rhonda (David) Hinkson, Paul (Melanie) Douglas, Robert Douglas, James Douglas, Beth (Brian) Hetzel, Lora (David) Struble, Tanya Steele, Samara (Tim) Buelna, Brooke Steele and Brian Steele; ten great grandchildren, Montegomery and Caitlin Headley, Jason, Christopher and Joseph Hinkson, Savannah Boeckholt, Isaiah, Kobe and Skylar Buelna and Braden Hetzel; one great great grandson, Xavier Hinkson and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son-in-law, Robert Douglas; two brothers, Raymond and Lester Steele; three sisters, Florence Coonradt, Ellen Wedo and Evelyn Gudvangen.
