Alois Shindelar, age, 92 of rural Fort Atkinson died Tuesday January 2, 2007 at the Ossian Senior Hospice Nursing Home in Ossian, IA. after a long illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday January 5, 2007 at 11:00 at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville by Rev. Donald Hawes with burial in the church cemetery
Visitation will be on Thursday at the Balik Funeral Home from 3:00 – 8:00 with a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 7:00 and at the church after 10:00 on Friday
Alois John Shindelar was born July 5, 1914, in Spillville, IA, the son of John and Anna (Kruchek) Shindelar. Alois attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School. On June 2, 1941, he married Blanche Rys at St. Paul’s Church in Walnut Grove, MN. Alois farmed most of his life and also worked for the National Farmer’s Organization for more than ten years. He believed strongly in the farmer’s right to unionize and price their own products. Almost to the day he died, he remained a passionate pro-life advocate. Alois was an avid reader, enjoyed music, playing cards, participated in the Czech choir and was in many Czech plays. He especially enjoyed family activities. Alois was a lifetime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and the First Czech Slovak Ladies Association (formerly the Catholic Workman).
Alois is survived by his three sons: Larry & Kay Shindelar, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Gary & Violet Shindelar of Sullivan, Illinois; and Ronald Shindelar, Ft. Atkinson, IA. Four daughters: Judy (Sister Miriam), Marty, SD; Connie & Edmund Samec, Protivin, IA; Anita & Mike Preston, Ankeny, IA; and Karen & Ivan Franzen, Ossian, IA. Thirteen grandchildren: Ann (Terry) Goza, Bart (Carrie) Shindelar, Steve (Sharon M.) Samec, Sharon J. Samec, Scott Samec, Jennifer (Alan) Weber, Robert Shindelar, Kathryn Shindelar, Danielle Shindelar, Joshua Shindelar, Sally Cline, Stacy (Rebecca) Franzen and Travis (Cheryl) Franzen. Nine great grandchildren: Colton & Landon Goza, Adeline & Tanner Shindelar, Matthew, Dominic & Joshua Samec, Jax Weber and Lindsay Franzen. Three sisters-in-law: Beulah Shindelar, Evelyn Rys and Donna Rys.
Alois was preceded in death by his wife: Blanche; two brothers: John and V.J. Shindelar; three sisters: Anna (Ed) Wagner, Agnes (Stephan) Frana and Pauline (Clarence)
