Rita Theresa (Hackman) Shatek was born on March 17, 1927, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Schmitt) Hackman on the family farm near Festina, IA. Rita attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina. She married Joseph Shatek on April 13, 1948, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, and to this union, five children were born: Shirley, Allan, David, Ann & Leon. Together Rita and Joe farmed near Fort Atkinson for many years milking registered Jersey cattle, and later raising Simmental beef cattle. Rita tirelessly helped in every aspect of the family farm and would start each morning by talking to the chickens. She was a wonderful cook, making big meals every day with produce from her garden, and a baker of delicious homemade breads, cakes and pies, specializing in desserts made with apples. Rita’s health problems the past 45 years made for countless trips to the Iowa City Hospital for treatment. She and Joe went to Iowa City three times a week for three months to receive Home Hemodialysis Training allowing them to dialyze at home for the first ten years. She dialyzed a total of 2,560 times during her seventeen year regimen. Rita dearly loved her family and enjoyed babysitting the grandchildren whenever possible. She also enjoyed a good game of cards, especially after she entered the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in West Union on December 28, 2007. Rita was devoted to her Catholic faith giving her strength and courage until the end. She loved to sing, and was a lifelong member of the church choir, never missing an opportunity to sing for a wedding or funeral. Rita served on the Winneshiek County Extension Council, the Home Economics Committee and was active with 4-H. Rita and Joe were Amway distributors for 45 years and had fun times at meetings and trips.
