Leif Samuelson, age 90, of Decorah, IA died Sunday, September 18, 2011 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church rural Decorah Rev Mark Kvale presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from: 3:00 – 7:00 on Wednesday at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 at the Church on Thursday morning.
Leif George Samuelson was born on May 2, 1921, to Norwegian immigrants, Lars and Gurine “Karen” (Frovik) Samuelson on the family farm south of Decorah in Springfield Township (Townline Road). He was baptized on June 4, 1921, at the Decorah Lutheran Church. He attended the Hamre Country School. On June 15, 1941, Leif married Selma (Sally) Jordahl at the Mabel parsonage in Mabel, MN. Together they farmed first in the Springfield area and then moved to a farm near Waukon from 1947 – 1950. They then moved near Nordness until the spring of 1959, when they purchased their family farm in Glenwood Township. Leif resided on the farm until he entered the Aase Haugen Home on August 29, 2011. Leif also worked at Thornton's Feed & Grain and Deco Products in Decorah. Leif enjoyed going to dances with Sally, taking drives around the countryside to check crops, going to parades, "tinkering" in the shanty and family gatherings. Leif also enjoyed making Lefse, Krumkake and Rosettes with Sally along with the traditional Norwegian meal of meatballs and lutefisk. Leif was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.
Leif is survived by two sons: Jerry (Martha) Samuelson, Decorah, IA, Darrel Samuelson (friend Linda Fix) Decorah, IA; Eight grandchildren: Rick Samuelson, Traer, IA, Sue (Loren) Klimesh, Ridgeway, IA, Randy (Jan) Samuelson, Phelps, WI, Rusty (Rosalyn) Samuelson, Decorah, IA, Jerry Joe (Tracy) Samuelson, Decorah, IA, Marty Samuelson, Decorah, IA, Lee (Jill) Samuelson Decorah, IA and Jim (friend Chris Hertramph) Samuelson, Decorah, IA. Eighteen great-grandchildren: Andrew, Brooke, Brittanee, Savanna, Sierra, Cade, Jessica, Jennifer, Ross, Jackie, Reece, Riley, Gavyn, Gayge, Kirstyn, Brandon, Blake and Anthony. One great great-granddaughter: Payton.
Leif was preceded in death by his parents: Lars and Gurine (Karen) Samuelson. His wife: Sally on March 23, 1997. One sister: Bernice (Julius) Sjarpe. One grandson: Jay Samuelson. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Mary (Lawrence) Gudvangen, Joe (Ellen) Jordahl and Norman Hildahl and Arnold Hildahl.
