Sybil Lorraine (Olson) Schelley, age 86, of Eau Claire, WI., died Monday, November 20, 2006 at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa after a long illness.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 2, 2006 at Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, WI, with inurnment in Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire. Friends may call after 10:00 A.M. on Saturday at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is assisting the family.
Sybil loved her church, so the family requests that memorials be sent to Grace Lutheran Church, 202 West Grand Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54703. Gifts will go to the music and van funds.
She was born October 15, 1920, in Eau Claire, WI, the daughter of Arthur and Alma (Peterson) Olson. She lived for most of her life in Eau Claire. Sybil grew up as an only child. She graduated from Eau Claire High School and Eau Claire Teacher’s College where she earned a degree in elementary education in 1941. She loved to tell the story of how her parents bought their first car so that she could apply for jobs. Her first teaching positions were in Bloomer, Janesville and Altoona.
Upon Loren Schelley’s return to Eau Claire after serving in the Army in World War II, she became reacquainted with him. They had played in the high school band together. They were “set-up” by their mothers who played bridge together because of their mutual interest in golf. Sybil always said her goal was to marry someone who wanted to stay in the Eau Claire area and who would attend church with her every Sunday. Loren fit those qualifications. They were married in 1946 at Grace Lutheran Church where they both sang in the church choir until Loren’s death 53 years later. Sybil taught school for 40 years, retiring from Arlington Heights Elementary School in 1981.
From 1982-2000, Loren and Sybil spent their winters in Winter Haven, Florida. Sybil loved to play bridge, lunch with friends and join Loren for rounds of golf. If there was something to do, she was first in line to go. Throughout their lives, Loren and Sybil also enjoyed music, travel and staying connected with friends.
Loren and Sybil had two girls. Ann Marten and special friend, Richard Gerhartz, live in Wisconsin Rapids. Amy Noel and husband, John, live in Decorah, IA. In addition to her daughters, Sybil is survived by Ann’s children Chris (Tracy) and son Cade who live in Waconia, MN; Matt and sons Zakery and Colton who live in Boyceville, WI; and Schelley who lives in Mesa, AZ; Amy’s son, Ian, is a Cadet Third Class at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.
Sybil was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Loren Schelley on February 24, 2000.
These past few years when Sybil could not drive, she greatly appreciated rides from friends and the church. If you would like a ride to her visitation and service, please contact Grace Lutheran Church office (715) 832-9713.
