Thelma Sampson, age 82, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 16, 2010, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Harris Hostager presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Friends may call from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 9:00 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning.

Thelma Josephine (Skaim) Sampson was born on April 23, 1928, the daughter of Joseph and Thelma (Moen) Skaim, in rural eastern Winneshiek County. Thelma attended rural country schools at the Rocksvold Country School, later receiving her GED. Thelma married Lester D. Sampson on April 25, 1948, at the Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, and to this union, two sons were born: Reg and Bruce. Thelma worked at the Smith Memorial Hospital and at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital as a certified nurse’s aide for twenty-nine years. She also worked for four years in food service for the Decorah High School. Thelma enjoyed trout fishing, dancing, gambling at the boat, along with gardening and her flowerbeds. Thelma was a member of the First Lutheran Church for over sixty-two years and ladies circle. She also taught Sunday School and helped with the food pantry.

Thelma is survived by her two sons: Reg (Laurie) Sampson, Decorah, IA, and Bruce (Sally) Sampson, Perry, GA. Six grandchildren: Jarad (Kirstin) Sampson, Adrienne Sampson, Jameson Sampson, Salena Sampson, Kirsten (Daniel) Whitehead and Erica Sampson. Four great grandchildren: Payton & Olivia Sampson and Landon & Nolan Whitehead. Seven sisters: Jan (Robert) Lien, Austin, MN; Gladys Howe, Waterloo, IA; Lorraine Wright, Cedar Falls, IA; Markeata Schuler, Waterloo, IA; Adeline Jenson, Cedar Rapids, IA; Anna Marie (Jerry) Ewing, Waukon, IA; and Darlene Kline, Waukon, IA. Four brothers: Harry (Doreen) Larson, MacGregor, IA; Daryl (Ellen) Larson, Waverly, IA; Clark Larson, Allentown, PA; and David (Linda) Larson, Trenton, NJ. One brother-in-law: Robert Daniels, Waterloo, IA. One Aunt: Nora Moen, Decorah, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Sampson Engen (Lester), Decorah, IA and Verna Walters Sampson, Canyon Lake, TX. One brother-in-law: Durwin Sampson, Evansville, IN, along with many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph and Thelma (Moen) Skaim. Her step-father: Leonard Larson in 1981. Her husband: Lester D. Sampson in 1997. Her father and mother-in-law: Maurice and Anna Sampson. One sister: Mildred Daniels in 2005. One sister-in-law: Janet (Snitker) Larson. Six brothers-in-law: Graydon Howe, Dick Wright, Dick Schuler, Bob Jenson, Wes (Carolyn) Sampson and Gavin Sampson.
