Iva Sampson, age 84, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, in LaCrosse, WI following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 10, 2006, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Steven Jacobsen and Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Eldorado, Iowa.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday morning.

Iva Martha (Lauer) Sampson was born on August 30, 1921 in Eldorado, Iowa, the daughter of Fritz and Ella (Neuman) Lauer. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Eldorado. Iva attended Eldorado School through the eighth grade and after that, worked in many homes as a housekeeper. During WWII, she worked at a Defense Plant in Oelwein. On April 11, 1948, she was united in marriage to Milferd Sampson at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. To this union, one daughter, Karen was born in 1952. They farmed near Eldorado and West Union until buying their farm between West Union and Hawkeye in 1953. In 1981, they sold their farm and moved to Decorah, eventually buying a home on East Street where they lived the rest of their lives. Iva enjoyed crocheting and playing cards with neighbors and friends as well as visits from grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling most of the United States. On the farm, she had many little projects including cooking meals and her many flower gardens. Iva was a member of the First Lutheran Church.

Iva’s survivors include her daughter, Karen (Ken) Holthaus, Decorah, IA. Four grandchildren: Kory (Donna) Holthaus, Postville, IA; Kyle (Mari) Waukon, IA; Kelly (Angie) Gillette, WY; and Kayla (Mike) Franzen, Postville, IA. Six great grandchildren: Dakota, Brooke, Kourtney, Teddy, Violet and Landon Holthaus and a great grandchild due in October. Two sisters: Helen Grimes, Decorah, IA and Luella “Tudy” (George) Meyer, Ft. Atkinson, IA. Sister-in-law: Avis Buchtela (Leo) Fayette, IA and several nieces and nephews.

Iva was preceded in death by her husband, Milferd Sampson in 1997; her parents: Fritz and Ella Lauer; father and mother-in-law: Teddy and Elnora Sampson; brother: Oliver Lauer and brother-in-law: Haldain Grimes.

Iva was a special lady-Grandma to many; friend to all and will be missed by everyone.
