Arnold “Arnie” Rohm, age 91, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Saturday, August 29, 2009, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Tom Pietz, Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Gene Hermeier presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday morning.

Arnold Melvin Rohm was born on August 26, 1918, the son of Ole H. and Thorbjorg (Skaftedal) Rohm in Decorah, Iowa, along with his twin sister Anna. Arnie was confirmed in 1932 at the Decorah Lutheran Church and graduated from Decorah High School in 1936. After graduation, he worked at Piggy Wiggly and Grangaard’s groceries until September 1942, when he entered the US Army. He served during World War II for thirty-eight months. After his discharge he was married to Dolores Brooks on December 9, 1945, in Decorah. Arnie worked at Bolson’s Poultry Farm and then farmed for about fifteen years. He owned and operated the Hobby Shop about ten years. Arnie worked for Coast to Coast and then at Luther College in the Book Store and in maintenance for fourteen years. He retired from Luther College and then worked part time in the Gift Shop at the Vesterheim Museum and for several years. Arnie was a member of the Stamp Club, Coin Club, and the Master Gardeners Club. Arnie was also very interested in genealogy, rosemaling, bird watching, and flowers; especially his African violets and orchids. He also was a member of the Luren Singers, making two trips to Norway. Arnie was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, serving on the church council, the Board of Deacons and taught Sunday school in his early years.

Arnie’s survivors include his twin sister: Anna Iverson, Decorah, IA. One brother: Marvin (Ruth) Rohm, Cedar Falls, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Brooks, Decorah, IA, and Marie Rohm, Decorah, IA, along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

Arnie was preceded in death by his parents: Ole H. and Thorbjorb (Skaftedal) Rohm. His wife: Dolores Rohm on January 5, 2008. Three sisters: Martha Rosendahl, Mabel Eittreim and Esther Barrett. One brother: Erling Rohm. Five brothers-in-law: Leonard Iverson, Charles Rosendahl, William “Bill” Brooks, Delmar Brooks and Ralph Nelson.
