Don Rodenkirk, age 81, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa formerly of Decorah, Iowa died on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA, from an age related illness.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 14, 2007,{sic} at 11:00 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Doug Mathison, from the Glenwood Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.
Friends may call from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter - Balik Funeral Home, Decorah, Iowa, and until time of services at the funeral home on Monday morning. There will be a VFW Memorial Service at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon.
Donald Francis Rodenkirk was born on April 23, 1926, the son of William Mathias and Margaret (Alm) Rodenkirk in Detroit, Michigan. As a child, Don moved with his family to Decorah, where he graduated from Decorah High School. He enlisted in the US Navy and served during World War II. Don married Ellen Johnson on April 8, 1950, in Hudson, WI. Don worked on the Dew line in Greenland for one year. He started working at Interstate Power Company in Decorah. He was transferred to West Union in 1968; to Fulda, MN in 1970; returned to Decorah in 1973; and then retired in 1987. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, puttering around and fixing anything that wasn’t working. He was a member of the Helof Holm VFW Post #1977.
Don’s survivors include his three daughters: Simone Bean, Marion, IA; Donna (Mike) Weaver and Wendy (Steve) Miller both of Cedar Rapids, IA. One son: Bernard “Butch” (Angie) Rodenkirk, Des Moines, IA. Ten grandchildren: Chad (Darcy) Dempster, Marie Bean; Amy and Meghan Rodenkirk, Brian (Kari) Rodenkirk & Neal Rodenkirk; Grant & Matthew Weaver; Ellen & Andrea Miller. Three great grandchildren: Madison, Mekenna & Colby Dempster. Two sisters: Rosemary Holland, Decorah, IA and Hazel (Bill) Baxter, New Albin, IA. Two: sisters-in-law: Ruth Moen, Cedar Rapids, IA and Charlotte Rodenkirk, Cedar Rapids, IA.
Don was preceded in death by his parents: William and Margaret Rodenkirk. His wife: Ellen Rodenkirk on May 20, 2003. One brother: Theodore “Ted” Rodenkirk. One granddaughter: Christina Bean and one grandson: Todd Dempster.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Stahlberg, Dr. Boddicker and Dr. Beckett and the staff at St. Luke’s Hospital.
