Iona M. Price, age 85, of Decorah, Iowa, died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah following a short illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 22, 2008 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, IA, with Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery.
Visitation is after 9:30 A.M. Monday, one and a half hours before services, at the Church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of arrangements.
Iona Marcella (Young) Price was born at home in rural Decorah, Iowa on December 6, 1923, the daughter of Philip and Clara (Barth) Young. She attended rural country school in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa through the eighth grade.
She was united in marriage to Dean M. Price on February 14, 1946 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Locust, Iowa. This union was blessed with three children: Linda, Thomas and Rochelle.
Iona and Dean farmed the family century farm in Burr Oak Township for over 50 years. They retired and continued to live there until 2000 when they moved into Decorah.
Iona was a member of Burr Oak Lutheran Church where she was active in Ladies’ Aid and Circle. She liked playing cards with friends, liked to needle point and help with quilts for the church. She loved to trout fish, bake and garden. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family: her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean, on January 18, 2003; her parents; one brother, Lester Young; two sisters, Laverne Nordsving and Leila Matter; and three brothers-in-law: Cy Nordsving, Stanley Matter, and Lloyd Gjere.
Iona is survived by her three children: Linda Struthers of Ankeny, IA, Tom (Patty) Price of Elk Run Heights, IA, and Rochelle (Jim) Becker of Postville, IA; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Lori (Brian) Martin and their children, Jacob & Tyler, of Norwalk, IA; Jodi (Eddie) Ballard and their daughter, Georgia, of Windsor Heights, IA; Stephanie (Wes) Baltzell and their children, Abigail, Kamryn, Alyxandria and Ruthie, of Owasso, OK; Mitchell Becker, Colton Becker and Tori Becker all at home in Postville, IA; one sister: Edna Gjere of Decorah, IA; one brother-in-law, Daniel “Art” (Ruth) Price of Burr Oak, IA; and one sister-in-law, Helen Young of Cedar Rapids, IA.
