Merlyn Phillips, age 76 of Spillville, IA died Sunday, September 11, 2011 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse WI.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA Rev. Donald Hawes will preside, burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 Tuesday at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 6:00p.m. there will also be visitation after 10:00 at the church on Wednesday.

Merlyn Stanley Phillips was born June 30, 1935, to Stanley and Lillian (Novotny) Phillips at Ft. Atkinson, IA. Merlyn attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School. He then farmed with his parents north of Spillville. Merlyn served in the U.S. Army from 1958-59 in Augsburg, Germany. On June 17, 1961, Merlyn married Mary Herold at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson, IA. Merlyn and Mary farmed the family farm until 1997. Merlyn enjoyed tinkering in his shop, camping, reading and polka music. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the Spillville American Legion Post #467.

Merlyn is survived by his wife: Mary Phillips. Four sons: Vern (Pam) Phillips, Calmar, IA; Lloyd (Patty) Phillips, New Hampton, IA; Tony (Julie) Phillips, Ridgeway, IA; Ted (Rebecca) Phillips, Calmar, IA. Two daughters: Terri (Steve) Balik, Spillville, IA and Becky (Josh) Ott, Spillville, IA. Son-in-law: Tom Marhoul, Ridgeway, IA. Grandchildren: Matt and Amanda Phillips, Lee Balik, Mitchell Phillips, Cole, ZeAnna and Tessa Phillips, Riley, Dahlyn, Isaiah and Andrew Ott, Lillian and Johnathan Phillips. Sister-in-law: Patsy Herold, Ft. Atkinson, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Jack (Ann) Herold, Ft. Atkinson, IA and Jerry (Audrey) Herold, North Liberty, IA.

Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents: Stanley on February 25, 1993 & Lillian on April 30, 1996. Daughter: Barb Marhoul on November 10, 2010. Granddaughter: Brianne Phillips on Aug. 1, 2003. Father and mother-in-law: Paul Herold on April 20, 1984 and Theresa Herold on November 12, 1981. Brother-in-law James Herold on December 7, 2009
